Warmer and sunnier weather is on the horizon. Time to turn the grill on, jump in a swimming pool, and go on vacation! Summer is a great season to put into practice tools for recovery. All the things you enjoyed about summer before, are even more enjoyable in recovery.
1- If you go to events where alcohol is present, take a sober friend with you. No doubt you are strong and secure, but even the strongest people need support at times. Taking support with you to events is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it’s a sign of strength and awareness.
2-Go to summer events where alcohol use isn’t the main focus. Some examples are:
3- Spend time with people who encourage you to stay sober. All of your friends and loved ones may not be in recovery. That’s okay. As long as your support system doesn’t abuse substances and they encourage your recovery, spend time with them. An important strategy for recovery is to avoid isolation. Isolation does not benefit you. You need people, and you especially need supportive people.
4- Go skydiving. Seriously, challenge yourself to sober, exhilarating fun. Nothing beats the thrill of natural adrenaline. Excitement and thrills can light up the same parts of the brain as alcohol and drugs. This means that you will get a rush of euphoria from natural adventures. Here are some examples of natural adventures:
The list is endless for having a sober, summer adventure. Just because you are in recovery, does not mean that you can’t have fun anymore. Fun in recovery is more lasting and real. Challenge yourself to experience a sober, summer adventure.
