Predictors of Success in Recovery - Hired Power

There is a growing body of research indicating that there are certain factors that correlate with positive recovery outcomes for substance use disorders.

Level of Care

Research shows that if an individual receives a “continuum of care” in one location, they are more likely to experience stability and accountability, which influences recovery efforts.  What this means is that an individual can receive intensive inpatient services, residential services, intensive outpatient services, and outpatient services all in one facility.  This reduces the need for an individual to engage in detox services in one location and following detox, moving to another facility for an additional level of care.

Intensive inpatient services would include 24/7 medical supervision and high-intensity interventions.  Residential services include lower-intensity 24/7 care managed by clinical staff.  Intensive outpatient services include 10-20 hours or more of services that do not require overnights.  Outpatient services includes low-intensity day services usually lasting fewer than 10 hours per week.  Outpatient services are also known as aftercare.  If an individual could receive these levels of care at one facility, they will not need to move from facility to facility, which increases stability and accountability.  The individual can develop a routine and familiarity with the one treatment center.

Evidence-Based Treatments

Some evidence-based treatments tend to predict better recovery outcomes.  These treatments might include pharmacological interventions as well as behavioral therapies.  For individuals with substance use disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization processing, motivational interviewing, and 12-step group therapy are the treatments indicating improved recovery outcomes.

Client-Directed, Outcome Informed Approach

This approach has been found to predict positive treatment outcomes according to recent research.  The approach focuses on the therapeutic alliance between the individual and their therapist, weekly therapy sessions, third-party evaluation of the treatment process and outcomes, and tools for tracking the individual’s outcomes.

Individual Factors

There are individual factors that predict success in recovery.  One factor is retention.  If an individual leaves treatment early, they are more likely to relapse, whereas those who remain in treatment for a longer period do better at achieving abstinence.  An individual’s level of motivation also predicts success in recovery.  Motivational interviewing can help an individual achieve positive lifestyle change that support long-term abstinence.  If friends and family members support the individual while in recovery and following treatment, there are improved recovery outcomes.
