If you are planning to mix alcohol with heroin, or already do, it is important to understand just how dangerous it actually can be. We’ll explore what happens to the body when alcohol and heroin are combined in the system, side effects, and what has the potential to go seriously wrong.

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, legally available for those aged 21 and over. Heroin is an opiate painkiller — typically abused in order to achieve its euphoric effects — which is illegal, but still somewhat easily obtained in the United States. When mixed together, they have a chemical reaction in the body which causes the effects of both drugs to be much stronger. Because the effects are so much stronger, combining the two can cause accidental overdose and/or alcohol poisoning.

The typical effects of mixing alcohol and heroin may include the following:

  • euphoria
  • lightheadedness
  • numbness
  • relaxation

Some of the more dangerous side effects that can occur from mixing alcohol and heroin are:

  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • loss of consciousness
  • impaired coordination
  • irregular or slowed heart rate
  • overdose
  • tremors

The increased sedative effects of alcohol can cause users to be involved in accidents or injure themselves, especially when attempting to drive, which is incredibly dangerous. Alcohol’s strength of intoxication will also increase while mixing with heroin, which can lead to alcohol poisoning much earlier than it normally would.

There is an increased risk of accidental overdose when mixing alcohol with heroin, yet it stands to be a common mixture. The combination can cause breathing to slow and sometimes even stop altogether. Since heroin is a street drug, it is nearly impossible to find out whether it has been contaminated or not. It is also difficult to figure out the purity and strength of the drug, making it dangerous to take on its own — let alone mixing it with alcohol. Because of this, there is no way to determine a “safe” amount, so it’s best to avoid mixing the two drugs at all.

It is never recommended heroin is a safe drug to take, however alcohol is considered okay when used appropriately. Combining the two or using either in excess can prove to be incredibly dangerous.
